The Best Class Available on Writing The Short Synopsis

Mary Buckham

Mary Buckham is the woman who single-handedly ended my inability to write a one-page synopsis. During a 2-week intensive online class she showed me how to reduce my rambling epic fantasy to five essential turning points, add flavor and seasoning (hooks) and write a synopsis that my agent responded to by e-mailing “I love, love, LOVE this!”

Mary is the co-author of one of my favourite “how-to-plot” books (BREAK INTO FICTION: 11 Steps To Building A Story That Sells), but it was the personal feedback she gave  during her class on writing synopses that really set me on the path to publication.

She has a class starting on May 10th that still has a couple of spaces left… and it’s only $50!

Here’s the website description:

CLASS: Mastering the Short Synopses: For those Who Hate to Write Them!
INSTRUCTOR: Mary Buckham
2-week class:  May 10-24   COST: $50
Registration ends May 9, 2010

This is a workshop for those who hate to write the 1-2 Page synopsis, but want to understand what makes them a selling tool in a writer’s arsenal. Writing a short synopsis doesn’t need to be painful. Learn what editors and agents look for in a well-crafted synopsis and what makes them groan. Templates will help you examine your plots and see how they are translated into selling synopses. This two-week series of e-mail lectures, homework assignments, examples and templates that you can use time and again should have you looking, thinking and writing the short synopsis in a whole new way.

A series of 12 lectures with 9 templates for you to analyze and extract the key components from your manuscript that an editor/agent needs to see to determine if the story is worth their time and attention.

Great for writers who:

  • Have never written a synopsis and don’t  know where to turn
  • Want to plot-proof your novel
  • Let’s you ask is everything in your story that  needs to be in your story
  • Want a faster way to master the short synopsis time and time again

In Addition: Each student will receive an additional 102 page Lecture Packet entitled: SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF SYNOPSES.

In this packet you’ll learn:

  • The most oft repeated stumbling blocks found in synopses and how to correct them
  • Concrete examples of a wrong way and a better way to get your information across
  • Why the most common stumbling blocks occur in synopses
  • A check list of do’s and don’ts that can make a difference in your final product

Find out if you are unknowingly causing issues with editors and agents when they read your synopsis.  Don’t let your next synopsis trip you up–avoid the seven deadly sins of synopsis writing and you’ll be well on your way to getting your full manuscript into the hands of an agent or editor.

So if you’re ready to break through and learn how to write a powerful, selling short-synopsis, don’t wait any longer.

I kid you not—this was the class that made me first realize I could finish a novel, and might even get it published. 🙂
